HSLA Grade 50 steel is a structural billet steel for structural applications. HSLA Grade 50 is a material grade and designation defined in ASTM A572 standard. ASTM A572 is an international material standard for billet steel for general structural usage. A-36 steel can be compared with this type of steel.
Both ASTM A36 carbon steel and ASTM A572 grade 50 are iron alloys. Both are furnished in the as-fabricated (no temper or treatment) condition. They have a very high 99% of their average alloy composition in common. For each property being compared, the top bar is ASTM A36 carbon steel and the bottom bar is ASTM A572 grade 50.
ASTM A572 Grade 50 (S 355 GP) HSLA Steel ASTM A572 grade 50 is a type of ASTM A572 steel. Cited properties are appropriate for the as-fabricated (no temper or treatment) condition. It has the second lowest strength and second highest ductility compared to the other variants of ASTM A572 steel.
High-strength low-alloy steels include many standard and proprietary grades designed to provide specific desirable combinations of properties such as strength, toughness, formability, weld-ability, and atmospheric corrosion resistance. These steels are not consid-ered alloy steels, even though their desired properties are achieved by the
Manganese: varies by strength level from .60% max for standard HSLA Grade 40 to 2.50% max for Greer Steel GS150; Sulfur & Phosphorus: .025% max; Micro-Alloying elements (Nb, V, Ti, etc) are added in combination to achieve the specified minimum strength level.
Grade 50 is a high strength, low alloy steel that finds its best application where there is need for more strength per unit of weight. Less of this material is needed to fulfill given strength requirements than is necessary with regular carbon steels. Grade 50 is used in general plate applications when the plate will be riveted, bolted, or welded.

A high-strength low-alloy steel plate that is utilized in a variety of structural applications. This specification is produced in Grades 42, 50, 55, 60 & 65, the grades representing the yield strength. Plates that are 4 and thicker are made to a 42 KSI yield, although material can be modified to reach the 50 KSI min yield.
High-strength low-alloy steel (HSLA) is a type of alloy steel that provides better mechanical properties or greater resistance to corrosion than carbon steel.HSLA steels vary from other steels in that they are not made to meet a specific chemical composition but rather to specific mechanical properties.

Grade C is the most used grade, it is available in Grades A through D with specified minimum yield stresses from 24 to 33 ksi. 1.1.2 High-Strength Low-Alloy Steels Those steels which have specified minimum yield points greater than 40 ksi and achieve that strength in the hot-rolled condition, rather than by heat treatment, are known as HSLA steels.
ASTM A1018. The A1018 specification is the Standard specification for heavy gauge Hot-Rolled Sheet and Strip Carbon(CS), Structural(SS)), High-Strength Low-Alloy(HSLAS), High-Strength Low-Alloy with Improved Formability(HSLAS-F), and Ultra-High Strength(UHSS) steels in thicknesses over 0.230"(6 mm) up to and including 1.0".
High-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels provide increased strength-to-weight ratios over conventional low-carbon steels for only a modest price premium. Clingan's rigorous in-house testing and regular outside lab verification insures consistent quality in these designer specific grades.
High Strength Low Alloy or (HSLA) steel plate, is stronger and tougher than carbon steel and is ductile, highly formable and weldable. Our HSLA steel plates are used in a variety of industries including construction, military, and more.
A high-strength, low-alloy structural steel plate utilized primarily in the manufacture of bridges. Chapel Steel stocks A709 Grade 36, A709 Grade 50 and A709 Grade 50W. These grades are often specified with Charpy tests referencing the specific zone or lowest anticipated service temperature.

ASTM A1011 SS Grade 50 or A1011 HSLAS Grade 50. The HSLAS grade is closer to an exact match to A572, but either is going have the same basic performance. The SS grade is probably more readily available. CS grades have no defined yield or tensile strength requirement.
The 1018 steel grade may perform well under your application. However it has not been tested or approved for this application. If there was ever a problem with the steel, there would be no literature available to suggest that it was a proper application for this grade." So much for that bright idea, a50 grade hsla
A572 Grade 50 = The most economical of the high-strength low alloy (HSLA) group. A572 Grade 50 uses combinations of columbium, vanadium, and/or nitrogen to provide strength. Formability is good. Welding in the low and medium carbon grades is excellent. Used in transmission towers, auto parts, and truck trailers.

HSLA material will contain more columbium and vanadium than material that is simply a structural Grade 50. This is a benefit to the manufacturer as well as the customer. The use of HSLA Grade 50 steel allows for higher consistency and precision in the manufacturing process giving the purchaser a higher level of craftsmanship in their body.
ASTM A572 Low Alloy Steel Plate Scope: ASTM A572 Specification refers to High-Strength Low-Alloy Steel Plate (HSLA) for structural building, among the 5 steel grades of 42, 50, 55, 60 and 65, Grade 50 is one most common steel in application
A500 Grade A, B & C Tubing. Valmont Tubing produces square, rectangle, round and special shaped electric resistance welded (ERW) carbon steel tubing to meet ASTM specifications A500 Grade A, Grade B and Grade C often used in structural applications. The purpose and strength levels required will determine which grade is required.
A1011 HSLA Sheet Steel is generally used in applications where weight reduction is a major factor, as it offers a high strength at a fraction of the weight of conventional carbon sheet steel.
Grade A36 is becoming less and less common as Grade 50 becomes more common and cheaper. The critcial difference in steel today is the price difference between Grade 50 and HPS 70. Also note that there is a considerable difference in A588 Grade 50W and HPS 50W. Which seems illogical if the interest in only in the tensile strength and not hardness.
ASTM A847 is a high strength low alloy steel covering cold-formed welded square and rectangular tubing and pipe. The atmospheric corrosion resistance of this steel in most environments is substantially better than carbon steel with or without copper addition.
